Chivalry
Between the characters of ‘the imperious queen’ in Beowulf (who executes even the best of men for simply looking her in the eye) to Mallory’s ‘Guinevere,’ Chivalry was developed in physical form and prepared for its full-flowering at the beginning of our modern epoch (circa 1400 AD).
Chivalry, along with Knighthood, and the ‘Quest for the Holy Grail’ dominated the heart, deeds, and mind of Medieval Europe and especially the British Isles, from the death of Bede in the 8th Century up until the Battle of Hastings in the 11th.
If we were to read the entire corpus - especially from the woman’s point of view - of ‘gender specific’ (or even ‘race specific’) topics in the West and contrast it with the same before the time indicated - we’d have before us the ‘Being of Chivalry.’ To be sure, however, you’d have to follow the written word here like one must when reading the ‘Tao Te Ching,” for the “Code of Chivalry” is not written as a set of rules against a specific purpose, but as a secret language. This language is created by its practitioners through their free, joyous, conscious and loving participation. The understanding of the language can only come as an after-effect of the original creation. We have to take the “Code of Chivalry” in the sense of the “Enigma” encoder, but in our case, we can dispense with the machine, because we have a soul.
Or do you? ‘Autistic culture,’ especially pronounced in traditionally ‘masculine’ spheres today, possesses a kind of consciousness that is weak as far as ‘heart-forces’ go. In this case, ‘passion’ is often indistinguishable from ‘lust,’ and the object of Chivalry - the evolution from the work of the builder to the revelation of the artist - depends upon this discernment. Without a true understanding of passion - non-sexual ecstasy is incomprehensible, and with it, the concept of ‘evolution’ is relegated to physical growth and ‘specialization.’ For the “Latinized Thinker,” the intermingling of souls becomes ‘socialization,’ conversation becomes ‘transactional exchange’ and Chivalry becomes the study and rules of a specific ‘behavior’ and it merits are weighed solely against the necessities of material ‘survival.’ Through this lens, the ‘before and after picture’ of the practice of Chivalry is measured by ‘procreative success’ - the icing on the cake of natural selection.
Or maybe you’re too much in your soul. Maybe you’re retarded in the “imperious Queen” sense. The flip-side of the autist’s lust is ‘wrath’ in the sense of ‘hell has no fury like the woman scorned.’ “Seduction” is the soul’s assertion of dominance over the physical world - but her power, like the autist’s - does not set one foot into the realm of art. And one must first enter the realm of art before Chivalry comes into full view.
Chivalry is not so much the enemy of the autist’s “Latinized Thinking” nor of the psychic’s ‘Woke,’ it does not defeat “Scientism” or replace Religion. It does not negotiate, transact, explain, brainwash, gaslight, mansplain, or flatter anything having to do with the popular mind or culture. And least of all is it a technology, tool, or weapon created by Knights and Ladies to be used against the masses for the purposes of control or to further any material aim.
Chivalry was, and continues to be, a practice amongst the spiritual leaders of humanity for the purposes of divine unification of the masculine and feminine. As such, it has developed through three stages in its evolution patterned on occult laws and forms that govern both the microcosm and macrocosm. It is the first such practice that has combined the two streams of humanity since the division was imposed on Adam and Eve with their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
Here the path of Cain and Abel, of Man and Woman, joined together in sublime labor and ritual - in imitation of divine unity, but completely free of its command, or of any internal imperative. Here the highest impulses of humanity - freedom and love - joined together in mutual recognition towards our divine purpose.
This is Chivalry, which means something like ‘the art of the horse.’ This is the ‘horse’s ass’ won by the spirit of woman while Atlantis was sinking - this is male lust and the wounded body of Chiron, the Centaur-teacher of the Greek heroes - it is the horse that pulls “Plato’s Chariot” - an essential element to the analogy that explains all of philosophy - it is ‘the meeting with the unicorn’ a ritual practiced by the Ladies of the Middle Ages - giving the daughters of Cain unrivaled spiritual access since the Fall of Troy - it is the Knights’ mastery of the physical horse giving the Sons of Cain unrivaled power since the Trojan War.
In Chivalry, the art of the union of the masculine and feminine was practiced by each, for each, for the first time. Here, the path of the Warrior, Builder, and Artist joined in harmony with the Priest, Shepherd, and Teacher.
The Warrior joined the Priest, roughly through the years 800-1100 - Parzival, the greatest warrior and Grail Knight of the Middle Ages receives his name, is protected, guided and rebuked in regards to his ultimate mission by a “Hermitess” - the Lady Sigune. The Builders joined the Shepherds from roughly the years 1100 to 1400 - the authors of the Grail Saga, the Builders of the Gothic Cathedrals, and the Banks of the Templars were inspired, shepherded, and instructed by the likes of Abbess Hildegard Von Bingen and other representatives of this aspect of ‘the divine feminine’ such as “Bath Sheba” and “The Black Madonna.” From roughly 1400-1700, the Artists joined the Teachers through the work of the Renaissance Masters who were guided by Sacred Geometry and the resurrected Muse of Isis-Sophia.
What happened beyond the 1700’s in the development of Chivalry?
Shit hit the fan! Having failed to seduce or dominate humanity through Religion or State Power, the adversarial powers of humanity launched their final attack through the institutions of economy, technology, and industry.
In the mid-1700’s the Jacobite Rebellions took place. Highland Scotland, the inheritor and preserver of the best in the spirit of Cain, rebelled against his brother Abel in the form of a newly risen “Mercantile England.” The Highlanders were obliterated by the machine, and with them fell the spirit of Cain in all of continental Europe (except for one small harbor on the sea - the ‘Port of the Grail’ or ‘Portugal’ which hung on for a bit longer). The lowland Scots waged a different kind of war against the newly risen power of the adversary - a war of culture - known to us today as “The Enlightenment.”
The story of the Enlightenment cannot be understood at all without considering the role Chivalry played in it. Indeed, if Chivalry is omitted from consideration - the Scottish Enlightenment appears like a victory in of itself for the forces of the adversary - of materialism, scientism, or “Latinized Thinking.” The fact is, characters like the Scottish Adam Smith fought against these powers and won. But the victory was short-lived.
The spirit of Cain took root in North America. The American Revolution was simply an assertion of “Cain Culture” against collectivism or the machine. But Chivalry cannot be practiced whilst engaged in active conflict - and generations of war, industrialism, and finally compulsory education, destroyed its natural foundations and conditions for peace.
These were volatile times! The world was drenched in blood for two centuries from the time of the Jacobite Rebellion to the French Revolution and through the American Civil War for reasons the popular mind cannot begin to grasp. The masculine spirit of the age devolved from the art of the Enlightenment to bloody war reminiscent of the Middle Ages and He utterly lost connection to the divine or even practical element of the feminine spirit necessary for the practice of Chivalry.
There is perhaps no better demonstration of this fact than is found in the letter of Abigail Adams ‘to the Founding Fathers’ urging them to “Remember the Ladies” when constructing The Union. The Warriors of the Jacobite Rebellion failed to uphold their culture, the Artists of the Enlightenment could not ‘keep the light on’ past its inception - so it was up to the Builders to provide a form of governance to sanctify the individual human spirit (Cain). To read Abigail’s letter from the perspective of “Latinized Thinking” which is to say that of an autist, feminist, professional educator etc… is like putting a cat in front of a mirror - the gaze and the subject will not meet.
Chivalry was buried in this letter, expressed most perfectly as an individual appeal - but embodied with the universal Lady which finds her expression through the language of Chivalry. But Chivalry did not die there. Chivalry is restless and full of spirit its grave - it burns ceaselessly waiting to rise again to universal expression by means of free, joyous, conscious, and loving individual effort.

Can one be born not taught as a 'Cavalier' or 'Lady'? Can it be given 'from the start' in some cases? 🤔
There are some people, both men and women, who, when they approach you, it feels very different without their effort of 'proving' they were born 'like this'. I was fortunate enough to meet a few. Rare, but 'not dead' 😊 But..sad part today (and many yesterdays) - those people very often remain 'hidden', invisible, or even pushed back, because of the same reason - they were born 'like this', and exactly 'this' thru many years of 'tolerance, pride, politeness, deep understanding of not written ways and rules' made and make them give the others 'their way', which led us to exactly where we are today - separated, divided, persuaded and made believe, that only 'love-hate' (rather 'lust-I am done, move, go now', with obvious conclusion "you are all the same" on both sides) relationship between man and woman can exist. When was the last time you experienced..observed simple respect between a man and a woman? I am not talking about 'shows off'..but just simple 'street behaviour'? Even at home..how people behave..when no one can see?
Those of us, who 'get it', who understand, appreciate and value 'Chivalry' are as rare as those, who are 'Cavaliers and Ladies' themselves. And...one finds..one...in a pile of 'oh, Darling...they all are the same', as they are not. Chivalry is not dead, just as rare..as 'Black Diamond' is.
Thank you John, great article, so enjoyable to read...(can't watch the videos, as...my connection to cyber space never was taught of any 'Chivalry' and wasn't born 'like this')
Chivalry as a divine union is a very impressive concept. I really enjoy the span of literary figures who populate this article's landscape and have really enjoyed your enlightening familiarity with Guinevere. I know little to nothing of Europe from the Roman collapse to Charlemagne. It is a 'dark age' to my mind's eye. You have associated the code of chivalry to the Tao Te Ching in a way that enables my imagination. Perhaps Europe's lack of narrated history was not because Europe was widely illiterate or because the history was burned. Perhaps we see a symptom of life's fullness. Thomas Merton's translation of the Way Chuang Tzu wrote of a period when "Rulers were simply the highest branches on the tree, and the people were like deer in the woods. They were honest and righteous without realizing they were doing their duty..." My shadows tell me this would be a stretch according to what's popular conceptually, and maybe rightfully so, but I am grateful to have my inkling's range of motion stretched by this wonderfully expansive piece.
And to see Abigail! The Adams-Jefferson Letters are treasured at my house.
Cheers and thank you!
